Hogarth said he was keener on drawing character than caricature. Hogarth, Fielding had said, expresses 'the affections of men on canvas' and his figures 'seem to think'. Hogarth particularly disliked caricature because it was an Italian fashion that was being introduced to England by the same people who dealt in foreign 'old master' paintings and drawings. He apprenticed to a silversmith in Cranbourne street, named Ellis Gamble, and next studied for some time under sir James Thornhill, the historical painter, but not with any marked success. The great twentieth-century cartoonist David Low described William Hogarth as the grandfather of the political cartoon.
