It definitely LOOKS fantastic.
However this was a return to form given an extra kick by secondary casting of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to stand in for scenes which would have featured Ledger passing through the portal.The ghostly Lily Cole is somewhat reminiscent of Tilda Swinton in the way she looks in her role as the daughter of Dr Parnassus (Christopher Plummer). | Rating: 3/5
What really drives the film though, is the misfit cast of characters.
It took me time to watch this movie, for the first two times I almost found it boring already after 30 minutes, but it was worth to give a try for the 3rd time.

Don’t worry, it won’t take long. I highly recommend watching it whenever you get the opportunity.This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and it’s STILL incredibly good. I can't speak to how the film would have looked had Heath Ledger survived, but the improvised re-working of the script makes for a satisfying story, while honoring the man's legacy.Parts of the film look a bit dated, but overall I really enjoyed the production design, as well as the costume design. Terry Gilliam returns to the world building he has been relishing in since the 80s, you could feel a sense of genuine love from the filmmaker. "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present-day. | It's such a wild ride throughout the entire movie, with a sense of darkness to it.
Impossible to tell what was always jumbled and what got scrambled by the reshoots/salvage after Ledger’s death. | On top of that, he gave a fantastic performance. Centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his daughter reached her 16th birthday, she would become the property of Mr Nick. Just below that it reads "Ticket Confirmation#:" followed by a 10-digit number. If you're not in a Terry Gilliam State of Mind (cue Billy Joel piano intro) then any Gilliam film is going to leave you frustrated.
