The appointment of Gerrard was central to it all.The Progres made since these two sides last met is there for all to see. From the side which defeated St Joseph’s 6-0 last Thursday in came Allan McGregor, James Tavernier, Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield, Sheyi Ojo.On a sweltering night in Glasgow, Rangers were pretty much at full strength. For Progres, there were five survivors from the side which sent shockwaves reverberating around Europe two years ago.The only shock here was that it was only 1-0 at half-time.Gerrard’s men had absolutely pummelled Progres in an utterly dominant first half display.Yet they only had Aribo’s wonderful strike to show for their efforts. The midfielder had been majestic. Moments earlier Morelos had a strong penalty claim turned down.Gerrard’s side were patient in the build up with the ball finding its way to Aribo on the edge of the box.Looking up he took a touch before placing a brilliant left foot finish beyond the reach of Sebastian Flauss.Andy Halliday then had one shot pushed away and another cleared off the line all in the space of 60 seconds.Right on the half hour Gers pieced together the best move of the match and Aribo was again at the heart of it.He and Ryan Jack linked superbly, cutting it back for Morelos who swivelled and shot in one movement - his effort flashing just inches past.Scott Arfield then head straight into the grateful arms of Flauss just as it seemed his looping header was set to find the back of the net.Rangers could smell blood, but the Niederkorn goal was leading a charmed life.Just before the break, Niederkorn defender Tim Hall eventually cleared his lines after another Halliday cross caused chaos.Progres emerged for the second half with one clear intention - damage limitation.Every single player was banked behind the ball in an effort to frustrate a Rangers team that should really have been out of sight. On 52 minutes, Flauss raced off his line to save at the feet of Arfield once more. From the resultant corner - and just as you were beginning to wonder if Niederkorn’s luck would hold out - Rangers got that all important second goal.Steven Davis worked it short to Ojo who shifted the ball onto his right before curling it past Flauss and into the bottom corner.Morelos found the side netting on 59 minutes after yet more patient build up play by Gers.Moments later and Ojo was inches away from his second of the night but he just couldn’t connect with Aribo’s clever cross.Rangers had been wasteful in the final third with 63 minutes gone Morelos became the latest to pass up a golden goalscoring opportunity when he dithered instead of shooting.Five minutes later, and just moments after coming on, Jordan Jones then won a penalty for the home side.Darting in between Lateraza and Adrian Ferino the Ulsterman was clearly taken out.But Tavernier, normally so reliable from the spot, smacked his effort of the post and Progres could breathe again.Niederkorn hadn’t threatened all night but with ten minutes remaining McGregor was called upon to make a massive save at the feet of Jack Mmaee.
