We spent the week in Amsterdam during last year's (2019) Pride festival and can honestly say the whole event was absolutely amazing, especially the Saturday canal parade. During the Pride week there are numerous events in the city centre focused on celebrating diversity.


But organisers have made sure that there are still a number of ways to celebrate Pride Amsterdam, with exhibitions, walking tours, and daily television broadcasts, just to name a few.And in 2021, Pride Amsterdam will (hopefully) be back. That’s when a group of people from the bar Havana on the Reguliersdwarsstraat came up with the idea for a new event: Pride Amsterdam!The first edition of Pride Amsterdam as we know it was held on the first weekend of August in 1996.

COVID-19 The Canal Parade 2020 is cancelled due to the corona crisis. Pride Amsterdam is one of the highlights of the yearly Pride parades in most cities are used to mark the Stonewall riots of the 1960s. On June 28, 1969, members of the LGBTQ+ community rioted in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York.

Pride Amsterdam also recently introduced a Pride Walk to demonstrate against anti-gay violence both locally and internationally. Back then, there were a number of boats participating, including ones manned and decorated by popular gay entertainment venues on the Reguliersdwarsstraat. In recently years many Dutch and international companies have had their own floats at the parade, proudly showing off their commitment to diversity. Earlier this year (May 2020), the first five board members of the new board took office after the old board resigned as a result of media commotion. Then, around 100 years later, one of the world’s first openly gay bars, The Empire, opened in the Dutch capital. Share.

On the day of the parade, the whole city got involved in some way and partied from early morning onwards. Way back in 1811, homosexuality was decriminalised in Amsterdam under Napoleonic law.
