Ever since Tsukamoto started going digital the visual side of his films have suffered a little, especially the 'regular' scene. Tsukamoto seems to have found a good balance between two worlds, though I am looking forward to see him go mental once again. People expecting a regular entry from one of those four genres are in for either a rude awakening or a pleasant surprise. Ratings: 6.9/10 from 85 users # of Watchers: 194. I wish more directors would realize this.
She believes that only Kagenuma could save her. One big hurdle for viewers to overcome is the fact that this film is jam-packed with ambiguity from start to finish but I urge you not to be driven to frustration.

The murderous ghost in the dreams has already killed two of her friends and she's afraid she's the next to die. Moody pieces, maybe not as outspoken as in his early days (ie, no pumping industrial) but very atmospheric and absolutely crucial for accomplishing the right moods. Still haunted by his unwanted abilities, which allow him to enter other people's dreams, and memories of his mother dying when he was a child, Kyoichi Kagenuma (Ryuhei Matsuda) contemplates... Acting is very strong too, combining young talent with the mastery of Matsuda. Ryuhei Matsuda returns as the titular detective. A school was built on one of the Gates of Hell, behind which hordes of demons await the moment they will be free to roam the Earth. When he encounters a similar case he is drawn into a downwards spiral, shedding light on his particular powers and making the saga behind his personality a little fleshier and more concrete. For me "Nightmare Detective 2" was a pleasant surprise, but many people I spoke with after the viewing were less enamored by the convoluted story. Nightmare Detective 2 (悪夢探偵2, Akumu Tantei 2) is a 2008 Japanese horror film and sequel, directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, to the 2007 film Nightmare Detective, starring Ryuhei Matsuda as Kyoichi Kaganuma. There are tons of frightening images, but Tsukamoto is incredibly subtle in his direction (I must say, though, I'm no fan of the hand-held, digital camera work).
Nightmare Detective 2 sees Matsuda return to his childhood, edging in on the troubles with his parents, more in particular the increasingly severe panic attacke of his late mother.

The start of Nightmare Detective 2 is still a little unpolished, but during the final 30 minutes you'll hardly know where to rest your eyes first. I think a good 90% of the film does take place in dreams. He doesn't remember why he is there or how he got there. The first film had a visceral brutality to it, as this one on the other hand, can be described as a slow ride into silent darkness.Rowthree.com gave the film 4 out of a possible 5 and also commented that he would embrace a third movie, "I for one truly hope that Tsukamoto and Matsuda will return one final time and wrap the story up in a trilogy.
And it is primarily classic cinematographic effects that evokes a powerful feeling of unease. Tsukamoto is without a doubt one of my all-time faves.
A man sees his life changed forever when his fiancee shoots herself. Tsukamoto's first Nightmare Detective film marked an important turn in his career.
A Japanese soldier endures illness, starvation and brutality in the Philippines at the tail end of WW2.
This sequel is a huge improvement.
Even though Nightmare Detective is obviously a sequel, the tone and structure of the film are quite different from the first one.
